This rich and creamy sour cream and chive dip is the best appetizer when made with fresh chive. This easy chip dip adds a chive flavor to any fresh vegetable, party crackers, or sweet potato wedges.

While I like making this chive oil with leftover chives at the end of the season, this chive dip turns out best when made with fresh and vibrant chive shoots at the beginning of the season.

Young chive shoots have a more intense and vibrant flavor. They are full of aromatic oils, which makes this sour cream and chive dip delightful with a distinct chive taste.

How to make Easy Sour Cream and Chives Dip

Simple Ingredients are needed to make this chive dip recipe.

Chive

Chive is easy to grow herb from the onion family with a mild and delicate flavor, but not as strong as regular onion. It has long, thin, vibrant green leaves that are hollow inside. Chive is also available in grocery shops in pot or small bundles. It is a convenient herb to have on hand for adding a touch of freshness and a hint of onion-like flavor and color to various dishes.

Without the chive, this dip can be served as a fruit dip.

Sour cream (full-fat)

Its luscious texture and pleasant, slightly acidic taste make this sour cream the best dip base. I love to use it when making ice cream  or soup.

Cottage cheese

While I love eating cottage cheese as a healthy snack, it adds a slightly tangy undertone to this easy sour cream dip. Low in calories and high in proteins, cottage cheese is a versatile ingredient that is easy to blend into smoothies or dips. It is also rich in calcium and vitamins that are beneficial to bones. I also used it when making this paprika dip.

Second step – Chop fresh chive.

Finely chop two tablespoons of fresh chives with a sharp knife and add them to the bowl. I prefer to use kitchen scissors to snip my chives. Stir the mixture to distribute the chives evenly. Leave some pieces of chive on the side for decoration.

How to serve the sour cream dip.

Arrange the dip in a bowl or a platter at the center of a serving table. Surround it with crunchy crudites like celery sticks, carrots, bell pepper slices, radishes, cherry tomatoes, and cucumber sticks. It makes a great addition to this Easter bunny charcuterie board.

Serve the dip alongside a selection of sliced baguette, crackers, 3 ingredient pumpkin bread, pita bread, tortilla chips, potato chips, kettle chips, breadsticks or pretzels. These can be arranged on a separate platter or basket for easy grabbing and dipping.

You can store it for up to 5 days.

Consider serving individual portions of the dip on appetizer spoons for a more elegant presentation. Fill each spoon with a small amount of the dip and garnish with a sprinkle of chopped chives or a drizzle of chive oil.

Serve the dip in a bowl with roasted sweet potato wedges, crispy potato chips or these hasselback potatoes. Alternatively, fill the hollowed-out sweet potato skins with this creamy dip.

Variations to cream and chive dip recipe

  1. If you are a garlic lover, mince a clove of fresh garlic and mix it into the dip along with the other ingredients. You can also use garlic powder.
  2. To add a bright and citrusy flavor, grate the zest of a lemon or add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice for a refreshing element to the dip.
  3. For a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the dip. Adjust the amount according to your taste.
  4. If you are a herb lover, consider adding other fresh herbs such as parsley, dill, or basil for a herby dip.
  5. Sprinkle cooked and crumbled bacon on top of the dip just before serving. The smoky and salty bacon will complement the creamy dip and add an irresistible crunch.
  6. Enhance the dip with a smoky undertone by dusting a pinch of smoked paprika on top. It adds depth of flavor and visual appeal.
  7. Sauté thinly sliced onions until golden and caramelized and sprinkle them on top or let them cool and then mix them into the onion dip to add rich and complex flavor.

Make this recipe with Substitutions.

Sour cream can be substituted with:

  • Full fat Greek Yogurt: Replace sour cream with an equal amount of Greek yogurt for a lighter and tangy alternative.
  • Crème Fraiche: Crème fraiche is thicker, richer, and less tangy than sour cream but can serve as a great alternative to sour cream
  • Mayonnaise: You can replace sour cream with mayonnaise; however, mayo adds a different flavor and texture compared to sour cream.

Cottage Cheese Substitutions:

  • Cream Cheese: Replace cottage cheese with an equal amount of softened cream cheese for a smoother and richer dip.
  • Ricotta Cheese: Use ricotta cheese as a substitution for cottage cheese. It will provide a similar creamy texture.

Fresh Chives:

  • Green Onions (Scallions): Finely chop green onions, including the green parts, and use them as a substitute for fresh chives. They offer a mild onion-like flavor.
  • Dried Chives: If fresh chives are not available, you can use dried chives. Remember to reduce the amount, as they have a more concentrated flavor.

Chive Oil:

  • Olive Oil: If chive oil is not accessible, drizzle the dip with extra-virgin olive oil to add a subtle richness.
  • Garlic Oil: Infuse olive oil with garlic cloves for a garlic-infused oil that can be used as a substitute for chive oil.
