Beard balm ingredients
Rosemary
To make this beard balm the most effective I used an herb that promotes a healthy beard and skin. Rosemary is a warming herb that helps to increase circulation, promote hair growth as well as memory. Packed with antioxidants, rosemary is very often used in commercially sold skincare products to improve the quality of skin and hair.
Yes, to make this diy beard balm you will need dried rosemary aromatic evergreen needles.
Either you grow your own rosemary or you can purchase dried rosemary from Mountain rose herbs.

Rosemary beard infused oil
This is the main ingredients in this diy beard balm. You can use this rosemary beard oil on its own as it moisturizes and softens your beard hair and is easy to apply throughout your entire beard quickly. While beard balm has a thicker texture and takes a longer time to absorb.
Beard balm is also portable and stays on your skin and beard longer than oil that tends to absorb quickly.
You can also use it to make this DIY cuticle oil to strengthen nails and soft cuticles.
Vitamin E
Also known as tocopherol is an effective antioxidant that nourishes your skin and beard and also keeps other oils in the balm from oxidizing.
Shea butter
Extracted from the nut of the shea tree shea butter is packed with vitamins and fatty acids that carry soothing and conditioning benefits for the beard and play important role in shaping and defining your beard look
Beeswax
A natural wax produced by honey bees, beeswax keeps your beard soft, shiny and moisturized.

Beard balm recipe
First step – make rosemary beard oil
Select a carrier oil – I selected jojoba oil as a carrier oil for this project as it contains antibacterial properties that are beneficial for healthy beard hair, help with itchiness and dandruff. But feel free to select the carrier oil of your choice. Some other oils suitable for this project could be sunflower or argan oil.
Use a double boiler method to extract the medicinal properties of rosemary into jojoba oil. Just place dried rosemary into a glass jar and fill it with jojoba oil. I used my DIY double boiler and brought it to a slow simmer. Heat the mixture to a temperature of 50 C (122 F) and keep the heat nice and low for 5 hours. Remove it from the heat and let it cool down a bit before straining the herbal material through the cheesecloth. Now you have pure rosemary-infused oil that we are going to enhance with apricot oil and essential oils to get the best base oil for our beard balm.
I used this oil to make also beard butter that acts more like a softener and conditioner.

Second step
Use a precise kitchen scale to measure shea butter, beeswax and your rosemary beard oil.

Third step
Melt the mixture in the double boiler and mix it well. Remove it from the heat
Fourth step
Add vitamin E and essential oil (optional) to give an additional scent to your balm.

Fifth step
Pour the mixture in while it is still melted. Act fast as the mixture solidifies quickly. If that happens you can carefully melt and pour again.
I used 3 tins (1oz or 30 ml each) or you can use 1 glass jars (3 oz or 90 ml).
The beard balm will harden as it cools.

Best Essential Oils For Beard Balm
Essential oils are optional to use in this DIY beard balm but they can adjust the scent and also add some medicinal benefits. Rosemary beard oil is already aromatic and gives a nice woody, evergreen aroma but you can adjust it with essential oils. If you like the smell of rosemary, add rosemary essential oil to boost it. If you prefer other scents you can experiment with Sandalwood, cedar, pine or lemon essential oil. Some people like the Peppermint scent and some people prefer vanilla. You can try to mix two or three scents but mix it in a separate container before adding it to the beard balm.

How to apply the beard balm
The best time to apply this beard balm is after a shower but it is not necessary. You can use it whenever you need to style your beard. Scoop a small amount with one of your fingers and rub it between your hands and over your beard.
How to make a beard balm stick
If you wish to apply this beard balm in the form of a stick you just simply pour the melted mixture into a deodorant style stick or lip balm stick instead.

If you wish to make a vegan version of this balm you can swap beeswax with this vegetable was candelilla wax.
Candelilla wax is found on the leaves of the candelilla shrub. This vegan wax makes an excellent substitute for beeswax. However, It will make a slightly firmer texture of your beard balm.
to use coconut oil in this recipe, replace half of the amount of beard oil you use with coconut oil. So instead of using 2 oz of rosemary beard oil, use 1 oz of rosemary beard oil and 1 oz of coconut oil. I would use fractionated coconut oil for better results in terms of texture.
