Dandelions are among the first flowers to welcome spring. I know there are others that come up earlier like violets, Snapdragon, or snowdrops but dandelions are bold and yellow thus a bold reminder for those who haven’t noticed yet that spring is here.
While I love to surprise my friends with dandelion fritter or capers I also like to use dandelions in skincare products. Although dandelions look like weeds they are very nutritious from flower to root with great benefits for the skin.
This dandelion salve and lip balm recipe are the easiest skin care products you can start with. Made of three ingredients that you may have already at your disposal all you need is to grab a small basket and go to forage some dandelion blossoms

Foraging dandelions
You need to collect dandelion blossoms on a dry sunny day when the flower heads are fully opened. Avoid places near roadways and make sure that places you collect them are 100% chemicals (pesticides) free. Don’t wash them just carefully remove any insects or small ants. Yellow dandelion petals are sweet and tasty in the recipes but we need to set them dry or wilted before using them in our dandelion salve.

Drying dandelions
Fresh dandelions contain quite a lot of moisture that can cause the oil to get sludgy. I just simply spread them on a paper towel or homemade drying screens and let them wilt overnight. If you want to play really safe, let them dry completely which will take several days, depending on the weather.
As I mentioned at the beginning dandelion salve recipe contains just three ingredients and one of them is dandelion oil.

Dandelion oil recipe
I like to use the traditional method of infusion where I leave dried or wilted dandelion blossoms macerate in the carrier oil for 2 weeks.
To make this dandelion salve you will need one cup of dandelion oil thus use the size of a pint jar to fill it ½ with dandelion blossoms. Pour over a carrier oil of your choice and fill the jar almost to the top.
As a carrier oil, you can use any vegetable oil of organic quality (olive, coconut, almond, primrose, etc)
Cover the jar with a lid and let it sit in the dark place with an occasional shake for 2 weeks. Once you strain it with cheesecloth you will get a high-quality scented golden dandelion-infused oil.

Dandelion salve recipe
Once the dandelion oil is finished making the salve is very easy and fast.
First step
You can use a double boiler or create a homemade double boiler by placing a small pyrex bowl over a pot filled with 3 cm of water.
Second step
Place beeswax and dandelion oil in the pyrex bowl and gently heat it till the beeswax is fully melted. MIx it occasionally.

Third step
Once melted remove it from heat and add essential oils if you want to.
Fourth step
Carefully pour the mixture into a sterilized glass jar and let it sit for a couple of hours.
Dandelion lip balm
Similarly you can make dandelion lip balm. Right now you should still have some dandelion oil left in your jar.
It has similar effects to the cream when applied to the lips.
Ingredients you need to make 4-6 dandelion lip balms
you will use the same ingredients as in the dandelion salve recipe, just add coconut oil.

First step
Gently heat the dandelion oil in a bain-marie (a double boiler) with the beeswax.
add coconut oil
Second step
Stir occasionally until the beeswax and coconut oil are fully melted
Third step
Remove it from the heat. You can add a few drops of essential oil if you want at this stage. It is optional.
Fourth step
Fill the lip balm tubes or a small jar when still warm

Hello! I have been a forager and herbalist for years and make many, many balms, tinctures, etc from a variety of plants, but dandelion has always frustrated me! When I try to wilt them, they always begin to go to seed or fully go to seed. Can they be used this way? I’ve never been able to find a clear answer to this, but I think I may see a bit of white seed peeking out in your picture! If so, I had it right and sadly wasted a LOT of dandelions over the years! Thank you!
Hi Branwen,
It’s great to meet a fellow forager and herbalist. Dandelions can be tricky, and it’s not uncommon for them to go to seed during the wilting process.I’d suggest collecting dandelions when they’re still vibrant yellow and wilting them in a single layer with good airflow to reduce the chance of them going to seed.
