Learn how to brew and enjoy a cozy cup of chamomile tea sweetened with a touch of honey.

In this tutorial, I will explain the basic recipe for making chamomile tea and how you can combine it with other herbs for added benefits, like lavender for better sleep or peppermint for digestion.

What is Chamomile good for?

What is Chamomile tea

Chamomile tea is a caffeine-free herbal tea made from fresh or dried chamomile flowers. You can also buy chamomile tea bags in most of grocery stores next to Earl Grey and other herbal teas. I never use chamomile tea bags as I can easily find fresh herbs when in season or prefer to buy loose, dried chamomile flowers.

It has a mild, floral taste with calming and soothing effects. People drink it to relax, improve sleep, or aid digestion. You can drink it plain or sweeten it with honey.

Chamomile Plant

Chamomile evokes memories of the sun and summer with its cheerful yellow and white blossoms. Standing tall and upright, chamomiles are gentle yet potent plants that continue to bloom long after the first frost.

As one of the oldest medicinal herbs, chamomiles were traditionally used for wound healing and to relieve skin irritations like rashes and eczema.

Historically, it is believed that the Egyptians used chamomile in the mummification process to ward off insects. The Romans honored chamomile by dedicating it to their gods, bathing in it, walking on it, and using it for medicinal purposes. Meanwhile, the Vikings added chamomile to hair shampoos to help lighten blonde hair.

Chamomile was also used to flavor beers, similar to how we use hops today.

How to make chamomile tea

You can use either fresh or dried chamomile flowers to make chamomile tea. The brewing process is similar for both, but you need to add more fresh flowers to achieve the desired strength. Dried flowers, the other hand, are easier to store. So if you want to dry your fresh flower buds, this is the right place to find out how to dry herbs. You can store the chamomile buds in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to six months to maintain maximum freshness.

Once you have your dried chamomile buds ready, you can choose to prepare your tea in two different ways.

Method 1: Infuser/Tea Bag

  1. Boil your water.
  2. Take an empty tea bag or ball infuser and fill it with the fresh or dried flower buds.
  3. Pour the hot water into your mug or tea kettle and add the tea bag or infuser.
  4. Let steep for about 5 minutes, then remove the bag with the flowers.
  5. Enjoy your hot tea with or without sweetener.

Method 2: Boil and Strain

  1. Bring a small pot of water to a boil.
  2. Add the fresh or dried flower buds to the boiling water.
  3. Reduce the heat and allow the flower buds to steep for 5 minutes.
  4. Strain the hot tea and pour the infused herbal tea into a cup.
