With such a broad selection of commercial (OTC) products =you may be wondering why you would make a homemade diaper rash cream.
Advantages of homemade diaper cream for rash
OTC products are often packed with ingredients such as fragrances, parabens or emulsifiers that can penetrate the skin.
Adjusting the ingredients
When making homemade you can always adjust the ingredients and their quantity to your liking, In the case of diaper cream it is a zinc oxide that creates a barrier on the skin and its quantity determines whether it turns the cream into paste and vice versa. If you prefer the cream to be more a type of paste – add more zinc oxide.
If you use cloth diapers you might have ruined them by using some commercial products as they may affect their absorbency.
The quantity of zinc oxide also determines whether the diaper cream is cloth diaper safe. Zinc oxide tends to stay in cloth diapers and cause absorbency issues. If you are using cloth diapers leave the zinc oxide out of this recipe. The other ingredients make an excellent diaper cream that provides relief for your little one.

The same applies to the use of essential oils. I prefer not to add any essential oils to skincare products that are made for newborns or up to 3 months of age. However, it is your choice to decide. Rober Tisserand who is a co-author of the book Essential oil safety said that the skin of babies until three months of age is very sensitive and permeable to essential oils. Their skin is not matured and less equipped to deal with essential oil effect.

How do you make homemade diaper rash cream?
First step
Start with the calendula infused oil that is made by maceration of dried calendula petals in olive oil. You can either use the old folks method; Fill your sterilized jar about halfway with calendula petals until it’s just about full. The petals need to be covered completely with oil, if some oil evaporates just add more to cover them. Close the jar with a piece of cloth and rubber band so it can breathe and place it in a sunny spot for 4-6 weeks, shaking occasionally. Strain the oil through a muslin bag and your calendula oil is ready. You can also fasten the process with the double boiler method where you place the jar filled with calendula petals and olive oil into a double boiler. Heat the mixture till it reaches 120 F (50 C) and let it slowly simmer for 5-6 hours. After this time, strain the mixture through a cheesecloth or muslin bag, disregard calendula petals, and use just pure calendula oil for this project.
Second step
Mix coconut oil and beeswax in a double boiler, bring it to boil and stir till melted completely.

Third step
Remove it from the heat, let it cool down a little bit. Once cooled add calendula oil. Remember the calendula oil temperature should not exceed 120 F (50 C) in order to keep all its valuable properties.

Fourth step
Add zinc oxide and witch hazel and mix it well.

Fifth step
Stir well until all ingredients are well blended.

Sixth step
Pour the mixture into a container and close with the lid
Seventh step
Store the cream in the fridge for up to 3 months.
