Homemade flower essences carry specific properties of herbs that help to harmonize emotions and thought.

Have you ever been involved in the process of making a flower essence? When everything started to bloom I was restless and inspired to uncover something new. Since I recently read about flower essences and their great potential I thought it is the right time to experience them.

It is the process of meditation that allows you to connect with nature. Selecting the flower, uncovering its characteristics, scent, and energy. Setting the flowers in the spring water and watching the sun’s rays penetrate the water. The whole process is fun and magical which made me peaceful and grateful.

What is a flower essence?

A flower essence is a water infusion of a plant in direct sunlight that transfers the energy pattern of the flower into the spring water.

These highly effective and safe to use flower infusions carry essences and properties of the plant that are specific for each flower.

Although holly flower essences contain only traces of physical substances they harmonize emotions and thoughts and support the concept of self-being.

The floral essences retain the energetic or vibrating character of the flower they are made of. This energy can then be transferred to the user of the essence.

While tinctures or infused oils are made by herbal extraction of a herb in alcohol or carrier oil, floral essence extracts a flower’s energy in water.

How are flower essences made

Flower essences were discovered by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s to help the human soul overcome fear, despair, and depression. He believed in the power of self-care and empowered people’s ability to support themselves.

There are two methods of preparing a mother essence. Both start with gathering fresh flowers at the peak bloom ideally on the morning of a sunny day. Place them in the spring water and expose them to the sun for several hours. The mother essence is preserved with organic brandy.

The second boiling method uses heat for extracting the medicinal essences. It is recommended to use it for blooming tree flowers. Once you simmer them in the spring water, preserve them with brandy.

Enfleurage is another method of capturing the fragrance of blooming flowers.

Another experience is to make these flower essences under the full moon instead of the sun. You need to prepare the bowl with spring water and fresh blooming flowers. Place the flowers into a bowl when the full moon rises from the horizon. Let the flowers infuse and release their energy pattern into spring water overnight in the moonlight and stars. In the morning strain the flowers to get a mother essence that you mix with brandy or other alcohol in a ratio of 1:1. Label and store in the dark bottle.

Dilute the mother essence with alcohol 50/50 before you start to use it. Dilute it into a dark dropper bottle half with mother essence (spring water)and half with brandy or other alcohol. A final floral essence is also called a stock bottle.

Second step – gathering flowers

The best time is in early morning on a sunny day. Plug the flowers or tree blossoms, (you may want to use scissors) and add them to your basket. You will need 2 cups of freshly collected blossoms.

Make sure the plants you chose to pick have not been treated with pesticides or other chemicals. Only pick few blossoms from a plant to ensure the plant can grow easily after your harvest.

Third step – infusion

Fill a glass bowl with spring water and place flowers on the top to cover the whole surface. Place the bowl in the direct sunlight for 3-4 hours.

Fourth step – straining

Straining the flower water through a fine-mesh sieve (or just use a leaf from the flower to remove it) into a glass jar and discard the flowers. Now you have your mother essence that you need to dilute.

Sixth step

Pour this mother essence into a dropper bottle filling it halfway with a mother essence and halfway with alcohol. The alcohol (ideally 40%) preserves the flower essence and holds the essence vibrations in the water.

Seventh step – labeling and storing

Label the bottle with the date and plant name and store it in a dark place. Floral essences last up to 5 years if you store them properly.
