Since I started using my homemade natural products on my face I feel like I’m fighting against time. I used to buy expensive cosmetic products to keep my wrinkles under control, which as you know is futile. Now I am in the phase where I stopped spending a fortune on branded items. I’m trying to apply what I feel is right for my face instead. Believe it or not, I don’t see any new wrinkles developing on my face anymore, although my eyesight is getting worse so that may also be why  🙂

Anyway, what I was going to say is that by using natural products you are not only helping your skin but also your wallet. Free of any chemicals, conventional astringents, fragrances or parabens this natural facial toner is suitable for all kinds of skin including the sensitive one.

Do I need a facial toner?

Toners have recently become an integral part of everyday hygiene. They are liquid moisturizers packed with antioxidants. These are nti-inflammatory agents and exfoliants are applied after the cleansing and before you apply night cream or serum. The advantage of homemade toners is that you can control the ingredients and modify them as per your needs.

How does DIY toner work?

It is important to keep the pH of the skin around 5.5, which is a slightly acidic environment. This acid mantle, a mixture of sebum, sweat, and dead skin cells protects us from pollutants and keeps us bacteria-free.  Disturbing this barrier can cause disorders like dermatitis, acne, or candida infections. The pH of our skin is delicate and easily disrupted. Stress, diet, lack of exercise or simply just luck of fluids are all factors. There has always been discussion about toner vs cleanser, but both are needed.

Cleansers tend to be alkaline and when applied the skin tends to overproduce oil in order to restore its original pH.

Natural facial toner, when applied after the cleansing, helps us restore the pH of our skin and keep our skin healthy.

Ingredients to make Rose Aloe vera toner

Rosewater toner for face

Rose water acts as a toner on its own or can be mixed with other ingredients.

Rose water is the main ingredient in this product. Made of rose petals and distilled water, rose water is best known for its soothing, refreshing and hydrating effects on the skin. A rich source of antioxidants, rose water strengthens skin cells and regenerates skin tissue. Rosewater is great for all skin types, from young to troublesome, over-sensitive to the already demanding older complexion even for fine children’s skin and for allergy sufferers.

On top of that rose water may help with certain skin issues such as ease redness and irritation caused by rosacea, may help with acne, eczema, or psoriasis.

How to make rosewater

There are two methods of rose water preparation, the hydrosol method, and the basic method. I have use the basic one for this particular DIY toner which is described below.

Witch hazel toner

Witch hazel  (a flowering shrub from the plant Hammamelis virginiana) soothes and strengthens tired skin. Its astringent effects help regulate grease production, reduce pores, tighten and soften the skin to create its youthful appearance. Make sure to buy alcohol-free witch hazel as alcohol, if regularly applied can generate free-radical damage and damage the skin.

Aloe vera toner

The astringent effect of aloe vera soothes, heals, and rejuvenates your skin. it contains antioxidants like vitamin E, C and beta carotene that help improve the elasticity of the skin, hydrate the skin and fight wrinkles. aloe vera stimulates the growth of new cells and allows the skin to heal quickly and naturally with minimal scarring. (1)  While You can also use store bought aloe vera gel for this rose aloe vera toner I used fresh aloe vera gel from the plant.

This diy facial toner with aloe vera and witch hazel can tone and repair the skin and is designed to fade away dark acne scars just like Crunchi makeup.

Aloe vera anti-inflammatory properties allow to use it in homemade mouthwash for healthy gums and teeth.

Apple cider vinegar as a toner

Made by a simple fermentation of apple juice, apple cider vinegar preserves the beneficial effects of apples. Additionally, it contains enzymes resulting from fermentation. Antibacterial and antiseptic properties of apple cider vinegar helps remove bacteria-forming dead skin as well as fighting acne, eczema or skin infections.

Chamomile is an excellent soothing agent in the toner.

Benefits of homemade rose aloe vera toner

The right combination of all the ingredients above creates one of the most effective toners that can:

  • Restore the skin’s pH balance.
  • Freshen the skin and remove traces of oil, dirt, or makeup.
  • Keep pores open by breaking up bonds between dead cells.
  • Lighten age spots and improve acne.
  • Bind moisture to the skin and keep it hydrated.

First step – Prepare rose water

When making your rose water make sure you use rose petals that haven’t been treated with any chemicals so avoid roses from florist, parks and gardens. The safest choice is to use roses from your garden, wild roses or order organic rose petals.  Once you gather three handfuls of rose petals, wash them thoroughly, and add them to a large pot with just enough distilled water to cover them. Cover with the lid and simmer for 30 minutes until the petals lose their color and. Use a colander to separate rose petals from the rose water, fill the rose water into a bottle and label it.

Second step – Prepare aloe vera gel right from the plant

Cut one outer leaf from the plant and wash it thoroughly. Remove the pricky edges with a sharp knife. We will need only the interior gel so we have to separate it from the outside of the leaf with a knife. Now, this is an important step – Allow the yellow sap to drain from the leaf. This is latex that we don’t want to have in our rose aloe vera toner. Use a blender to blend the interior gel.

Third step

Place the rose water, witch hazel, aloe vera juice and apple cider vinegar into a small bowl and mix it well.

Fourth step

add few drops of Chamomile essential oil/Rose essential oil

Fifth step

transfer the mixture into a glass or plastic bottle/spray. A glass bottle with a pump is the best choice to limit any contamination.

  1. I’ve never made my own facial toner, and I don’t really use one right now. (Maybe I should start!?) I do like that you showed how to use the actual aloe plant — I have struggled with knowing exactly what to do with mine. Great recipe and post!
