But why bother to make lip scrub?

Lips aren’t great at holding moisture, so they often get dry.

If you have chapped lips and always use lip balm without much relief, try a homemade lip scrub that might do the trick.

What is an exfoliating homemade lip scrub?

This homemade lip scrub recipe is made of natural ingredients. That helps remove dead skin cells and make your lips smoother. You can create it using everyday items found at home. A basic recipe might include sugar, honey, and coconut oil. The sugar is a gentle exfoliant, the honey helps moisturize, and the coconut oil provides additional nourishment. Other variations may include ingredients like cinnamon turmeric, beetroot powder, or vanilla for added fragrance.

Why use it in your Lip Care Routine?

One lip balm won’t do the trick if you want your lips healthy, moisturized, and nourished. An ideal lip care routine consists of several steps.

Firstly, regular hydration is essential, so drinking adequate water supports overall skin health, including your lips. Secondly, using a lip balm with SPF protection helps shield your lips from sun damage. Additionally, it’s important to exfoliate your lips, a step many of us forget to do! Lastly, practicing good habits, such as avoiding excessive lip licking, will leave your lips feeling luxuriously soft.

Honey

Honey is a popular humectant that is a moisturizing agent with the ability to retain moisture while also preserving the sugar scrub. Combine it with sugar and almond oil for this homemade lip scrub.

Sugar

Granulated sugar is a gentle exfoliant that removes dry skin to reveal new skin cells. If applied in a smooth circular motion, it also increases blood circulation. You can use any sugar at your disposal; the smallest granules are suitable for sensitive skin.

Less abrasive brown sugar with the most minuscule granules is suitable for sensitive skin.

While Turbinaro sugar is the least processed with the most minerals and large granules and is suitable for normal skin types. Try several types to see what works best for you.

I mainly used white sugar in this honey scrub to highlight the color difference. Otherwise, White processed sugar is highly processed and contains much less glycolic acid than its unrefined raw counterparts. Glycolic acid is the main ingredient that supports cell turnover and generates younger cells.

A similar effect has also been found in finely ground coffee grounds.

How to use lip scrub for dry lips?

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has a dual role in this recipe. It acts as a natural exfoliant and moisturizer, helping to remove dead skin cells while keeping the lips hydrated. Its nourishing properties and mild nature make it suitable for gentle yet effective lip care.

Vitamin E – optional

It has antioxidant properties that help protect the lips and moisturize, promoting a smoother texture.

Essential Oils – optional

While essential oils can be used in lip scrubs to add fragrance and other benefits, it’s crucial to use them sparingly. Also, use oils that are safe for topical application on the lips, like lavender, vanilla, or peppermint essential oil.

Turmeric powder

Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which may help soothe and rejuvenate the lips. However, use it in moderation, as its intense yellow can temporarily stain the lips.

Beetroot Powder

Beetroot powder is a unique and natural addition to lip scrubs. It provides a natural reddish or pinkish tint to the scrub, and some people believe it may offer subtle lip-staining properties.

Fourth step: Add colors

You are done unless you want to add some colors and additional benefits to your homemade lip scrub. I split the content into three small bowls and left one pure white, with no colors. Then, I added 1 teaspoon of turmeric to the second bowl with  1 tablespoon of lemon juice and one teaspoon of beetroot powder for a pinkish tint to the third bowl. Once mixed property, transfer each lip scrub into the sterilized lip balm tint.

Before you start, make sure your lips are clean of makeup or lipstick. Also, always use clean and dry hands when scooping lip scrub from the container to prevent contamination!

Scoop out a small amount of lip scrub with a spoon or cosmetic spatula and apply a lip balm to the lips with a toothbrush or your finger. Gently scrub the lips in a circular motion for 30-60 seconds to get rid of dead skin.

The sugar granules might make your skin feel sticky, so rinse with warm water thoroughly after you’ve exfoliated.

Apply a hydrating, moist lip balm or lip mask afterward, as your lips may feel a little sensitive after using the scrub.

With exfoliation in your skincare, you can better maintain soft, healthy and smooth lips.

HOwever, apply the lip scrub once or twice a week, this is enough to remove the dry skin to help maintain soft and supple lips.
