I came across one article with headlines saying “Lips are a woman’s most attractive feature”. It says that women don’t need to bother with their fluttering eyelashes or fancy hair as the most attractive part of a woman’s body is, in fact, her lips. According to a study, in the first 10 seconds of meeting a woman, men spend 5 seconds looking at her lips.
But there are many more reasons to take care of our lips as they age faster than our face and body. But with this lip balm recipe with shea butter and a little bit of effort, you can elegantly solve this problem.
Adding this exfoliating lip scrub to your weekly skincare routine is also a great way to enhance your dry lips.
DIY shea butter lip balm
Since lips’ skin is thinner and more fragile, we need to take good care of them.
This DIY shea butter lip balm with coconut oil and beeswax makes your lips moisturized and nourished if applied regularly.
Our lips contain less than half the amount of cells compared to the skin on our face and, therefore vividly reflect the color of our blood vessels. That is why sometimes the lips are darker or blueish depending on the current color of your blood.
They also don’t sweat nor produce any sebaceous glands responsible for creating a hydrolipidic film that is protective and keeps the skin hydrated. That is where this homemade shea butter lip balm comes into play. This natural lip balm recipe protects your sensitive lips against wind and sun, so they don’t get dry fast.
Best Ingredients you need to make this homemade lip balm for dry lips
The area around our lips is in constant movement, and fine lines around the lips tend to appear very quickly. The best way to protect them is to use a lip balm that contains the right natural ingredients to keep them hydrated and moisturized all day long.
All of the listed components below are moisturizers themselves. This means you can use them on their own to moisturize your lips.
Shea butter
Shea butter comes from nuts found on the shea tree. Raw shea butter is rich in vitamin E and A and contains many saturated acids. Skin moisturizer, shea butter provides anti-aging properties and helps decrease the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (3).
Its anti-inflammatory properties make it a fantastic skin conditioning agent.
Red clover oil
Lips contain a large amount of collagen that disappears with age and slowly reduces the volume of our lips.
I decided to use red clover oil that I made by infusing dried red clover flowers in fractionated coconut oil. By infusing red clover blossoms in coconut oil, you will benefit from the additional medicinal properties of red clover.
Red Clover oil contains isoflavonoids that help slow down signs of aging on the skin. Isoflavonoids act as estrogens and have the ability to increase collagen production and add moisture to the lips. They also improve skin thickness, skin elasticity, hydration, and reduce shrinks (1).
Similarly, I used lemon balm infused oil to make this lemon balm lip balm If you happen to suffer from cold sores.
Coconut oil
Another factor that makes your lips shrink with age is exposure to the sun. Lip balm with UV protection might do the trick. Coconut oil contains SPF factor 4-5, antioxidants that protect our skin from sun exposure and pump moisture back to your skin. In addition, coconut oil heals, hydrates, and protects our lips.
Beeswax
Lips are very sensitive to touch, cold, or heat as there are millions of nerve endings. Beeswax is a natural emulsifier that helps retain moisture in the skin. Produced by bees to build honeycombs, beeswax has antibacterial properties and is effective in treating inflammation, burns, and bruises. (2)
Our main goal was to create a homemade lip balm for dry lips that nourishes, moisturizes, and keeps them wrinkle-free.
Essential oils for lip balm recipes
You can use several essential oils to adjust flavor, scent, and medicinal benefits.
I used orange essential oil in this shea butter lip balm recipe as I like its smell, and it may help boost collagen production and absorption of vitamin C.
However, feel free to replace it with other essential oils such as Spearmint or Peppermint essential oil if you like its cooling and soothing effect or lavender that smells amazing and helps soothe and calm chapped lips.
I also want to use rose essential oil or chamomile for its excellent skin benefits and lovely smell.
Lip balm shea butter recipe
First step
Start with making infused oil with red clover. Fill your sterilized jar with red clover blossoms and pour over with fractionated coconut oil. Ensure all red clover blossoms are covered and submerged in coconut oil. Cover the jar and use either old folk’s infusion method where you let the purple flowers sit in the oil for four weeks with an occasional shake. Strain them afterward with a strainer or muslin bag and use pure red clover infused oil.
You can also faster this process with the double boiler method, where you place the mixture of red clover blossom submerged in the oil in the double boiler to use heat. Place the jar in a double boiler or slow cooker and set the temperature at the lowest setting for 4-5 hours. Strain the herbal substances and use just oil.
You can also skip this step and use just coconut oil. Thus instead of two tablespoons of coconut oil, you will use five and omit red clover oil in the recipe.
Second step
Use a double boiler to gently melt shea butter, coconut oil, and beeswax.
Third step
Once all ingredients are melted, remove them from the heat and add red clover oil (if you are using it) and essential oils as per your choice.
Fourth step
Prepare your lip balm tubes or containers and fill them with the mixture till it is still warm
I use used lip balm tubes as I keep recycling them. If you don’t have any used containers at home, buy them here.

Great video! It shows how easy it is to make your own lip balm. I love clover, but I had no idea how great it was at increasing collagen! Shea butter is one of my favorites as well. I can’t wait to make this! I had no idea that men looked at women’s lips right away. That is fascinating!!
I’ve been collecting and drying red clover blossoms from my garden all summer (cover crops gone wild! ?) and now I know exactly what to use them for! Thank you for the inspiration! Also, that’s super crazy that men like to stare at women’s lips so much! ? Who knew?!
